The grand silhouette against the Nebraska sky at the edge of town has become a community gathering space and wedding venue. Known to some as the Borden Mansion or Lake Mansion, it is now The Mansion at R&R Acres.

For owners Rick and Ranae Hintz, this business venture is a dream come true. Ranae’s mother, Ramona Kenning, purchased the mansion in 2000. During many conversations, Ramona and Ranae discussed turning the dwelling and land into something that people could enjoy through weddings and special events. After Ramona’s passing in 2021, Ranae inherited the property. The name R&R serves as a tribute to these deep bonds, representing Ramona & Ranae, Rick and Ranae, and the promise of Rest & Relaxation for every guest.

Reimagining R&R Acres

The Hintz’s are natives of Hebron. “We grew up seeing the Mansion and always admired it. We love old homes and enjoy the work of restoring them,” the couple shared. At the time of inheritance, the Mansion was in such a state that major renovations were necessary to preserve its history and structure.

It was, and continues to be, a labor of love, rooted in hometown pride. To save the home from being beyond repair, the Hintz’s “bit the bullet,” completing renovations inside, replacing 53 windows, and installing new siding. Renovations expanded to The Barn, a 40’ by 60’ building featuring a concrete floor, kitchen, restrooms, and two outdoor patios. Next, the Hintz's plan is to renovate the second-floor bedrooms of The Mansion as well. This renovation is key to their five-year goal.

“We have many different spaces that can be used all for one event or split for multiple events on the same day. We want to share these spaces and help create special memories for others,” said Rick.

R&R Acres is truly about the community. Because the property sits outside of city limits, it doesn’t qualify for traditional renovation grants. Therefore, the restoration funding comes from community events and donations.

Honoring Ranae’s mother and the heritage of Thayer County, the Hintz’s host two annual events that help offset restoration expenses, with the Annual Fall Festival being held on the first Saturday in October, serving as the centerpiece. Established exactly one year after Ramona’s passing, this cherished tradition brings families together for horse rides, vendors, and a simple day of Midwest joy. The second is the Spring Fling, held in March, which brings a vibrant market of vendors spread throughout The Mansion, The Barn, and the yard.

A Personal Invitation

Between planning and enjoying the annual staple events, Ranae and Rick invite the community and beyond to explore R&R Acres. Displaying true heartfelt hospitality, when the Hintz’s open the doors of the Mansion, it’s like an extension of their own living room.

A word from owners and facilitators, Rick and Ranae Hintz:

“We are a hometown family with hometown values and work ethics. As we continue to work toward being a full-functioning rental property, we appreciate the opportunity to share what is currently available. If you choose to have an event at The Mansion or The Barn, we will do everything we can to make it a success, including being present for set up and the event itself, if needed. We offer spaces with tables, chairs, and decorations for all seasons. For those wanting to express individual style, creative decor is allowed. Our experience is extensive as we have had meetings, weddings, graduations, vendor shows, Christmas parties, birthday parties, painting parties, quilting parties, group events, and a celebration of life. Join us!”
