News, Success Stories

As the owner of Land of Milk and Honey, Jennifer McMullen truly knows fragrances. She used her understanding of perfect pairings as a relocation guide that followed the unique scent of success. McMullen’s path was infused with the sweet smells of low crime rates, excellent schools, a high quality of life, an affordable cost of living, and a more favorable political climate, leading her to the harmonious blend found in Thayer County, Nebraska.

The Genesis of Land of Milk and Honey

McMullen opened Land of Milk and Honey over 20 years ago in Southern California. While the business name lends a nod to biblical references, its true inspiration is tied to her first blessing, her son.

Born in 2005, McMullen’s son developed a skin irritation that commercial products (including organic-labeled baby products) could not heal. Her desperation and determination turned into her drive to create a product for his relief. With her unique background in veterinary science and molecular biology, combined with her first-hand experience raising honey bees and goats, McMullen consulted a master herbalist. Her labor of love resulted in a natural soap that fused goat’s milk, honey, and oats.

Witnessing her son’s skin heal with each application, McMullen found another nurturing call that blended her scientific mind with her maternal heart. She then set out to create a natural alternative to commercial lotions, a solid salve (balm). Amongst family and friends, word spread, and requests poured in. With only two products to sell, Land of Milk and Honey was officially McMullen’s second child.

Cultivating Success in Thayer County

Ending her 16-year run in Southern California, McMullen sold her animals and uprooted her business (and family) to plant new seeds in Thayer County. She does not deny that this new chapter has certainly been a learning curve. Four years into the harvest, she quickly realized the weather dynamic drastically affected what she could and could not grow on her new farm. And while her flock is smaller and her product batches are less in quantity, McMullen is still thriving in Thayer County with future plans in place.

Currently, Land of Milk and Honey operates directly from McMullen’s farm, welcoming customers every Sunday between 1 pm - 4 pm. She continues to sell her handcrafted products at local farmers’ markets and vendor fairs. The daunting task of producing items for venues with almost 20k people, as she did in California, has dramatically reduced due to Nebraska’s smaller population. Yet, this change is a significant positive, as it allows her to foster meaningful relationships with her consumers - something that was nearly impossible to do in over-populated California.

McMullen does not miss the hustle and bustle of Southern California life; She’s found a new, more connected pace. When asked, “What do you love about Nebraska vs. California?” She did not mince words:

“I have seen the most beautiful sunsets! I love the people. You can’t go anywhere and have more friendly people who really do what they say and say what they mean. I love the fact that I can build my business back and be able to actually thrive here. I’m excited about the community here. It’s a very unique and supportive environment, and seems to be welcoming my family and my business.” - Jennifer McMullen
