Nestled in the heart of Thayer County, Belvidere’s Whistle Stop Station has long been a symbol of the town’s rich railroad history—and now, thanks to a recent grant, it’s becoming an even more welcoming destination for families and visitors alike.

With help from Thayer County Economic Development Alliance (TCEDA), Belvidere secured a 2024 grant from the Union Pacific Railroad to add a new playground to the site. Complete with slides, a treehouse, rock climbing walls, and a rubber base for safety, the playground was designed to keep children entertained between train viewings. “As years have progressed, trains have gotten longer and fewer pass through,” said Linda Hudson, Mayor of Belvidere and President of the Train Watching Station. “The idea of the playground was to keep children interested and entertained between trains passing through.”
The playground is now complete, but Hudson says there’s more in store. “There’s talk of adding swings and potentially other activities east of the playground to attract visitors of all ages.”
The Whistle Stop Station already offers much to see: a covered train watching area with benches, a restored depot turned museum, an old boxcar from Hebron resting on wooden railroad ties, restrooms, sidewalks, landscaping, and automatic watering systems. Railroad artifacts—ranging from vintage heating stoves to historic telephones—are displayed in the depot, giving visitors a glimpse into the past.
Belvidere’s pride in its rail history runs deep. The depot building was moved in 2017 from Alexandria, where it had previously been used for storage. It is the last depot remaining in Thayer County, making it a key piece of the community’s identity. “It’s a piece of history, which makes it more valuable for the train enthusiasts of Belvidere,” said Hudson, who also serves as President of the Belvidere Women’s Club—the group responsible for sponsoring the park since 2012.
The park name, Whistle Stop Station, reverts back to the era of steam engines that would slow down and “whistle stop” for passengers to catch a glimpse. Belvidere also holds the distinction of being the “B” stop on the historic ABC Railroad route for the Big Boy steam engine. “I believe there are only two or three of those steam engines still viable,” noted Hudson.
Union Pacific has recognized Belvidere’s commitment to preserving railroad heritage by naming it an official Train Town USA, a designation signed by UP Chairman Jim Young. The town’s rail legacy dates back to 1872, when the St. Joseph & Denver City Railroad Company laid the main line, later acquired by Union Pacific in 1880.

“Belvidere may be small, but it’s packed with charm and history,” Hudson said. “We want visitors to know they can tour a depot museum and catch sight of a train all in one visit. Belvidere is a true historical railroad town—and we’re proud to share it.” In addition to watching trains in person at the Whistle Stop Station in Belvidere, visitors can also view live footage of passing trains online at any time. The Thayer County tourism committee funded the equipment and installation of the livestream. “The livestream is a great resource for those who aren’t able to visit Belvidere in person to the enjoy the trains.”
